Thanks for the updates on the Aaron Bushnell story. I'm afraid Scott Ritter is right... most Americans are doing what they'd do if they were faced with such a moral dilemma as a genocide. They're doing nothing as their leaders say the "quiet part" out loud. (See my post "The Quiet Part" tomorrow morning.)
Diana, I wish I knew. I look around me and the vast majority of people show no awareness, much less concern or empathy. We in the United States have a huge comeuppance on the way. Will that prompt reflection, moral clarity and some form of restitution and accountability? I honestly don't know, but I do know that what we are now doing with Israel in Gaza -- and also in Ukraine -- is a continuation of what we have done throughout our bloody history without a whisper of moral clarity.
The USA isn't alone in this what I consider colonialist and white supremacist attitude. Canada's made out to be the good guy so often, but it's not. It does all kinds of nasty stuff, as do European countries.
And I think we all have a comeuppance. At least now people are more aware of what was going on. Hopefully we can figure out what to do about it.
This form of protest hurts so much because we’ve lost all of their potential resistance in the future.
I don’t deny the righteousness or bravery or their right to choose it, it just hurts.
The imagery of the horrors doesn’t impact those in power doing the harms in the State, but certainly shocks any who have been complacent or ambivalent into taking action themselves.
I hope service members refuse to follow illegal and immoral orders, risk courts martial, discharge or jail instead - most public would back them all the way & the USCMJ offers some protections for conscientious objectors in our all volunteer forces & if it doesn’t, it needs further reform & civilian oversight.
I don’t deny that these martyrs are effective or powerful; I just wish they didn’t go out like that.

Will do.
The phrase 'moral clarity' stands out from your well written article, Mark.
Where is our collective moral clarity, and how will we act upon it?

I hear you, Mark.

Let us hope ... and in our own ways prepare.
Diana, big new angle on the Bushnell story just dropped. Check it out here:

We're heading to war.
Agreed. I fear there is going to be a morning coming soon when we hear the news that the world is now never as it was.
Excellent thank you
Thank you.
If you haven't seen it, check out Chris Hedges latest piece: "Aaron Bushnell’s Divine Violence
Aaron Bushnell’s self-immolation was ultimately a religious act, one that radically delineates good and evil and calls us to resist."

May they rest in power.
