I went to my Credit Union today and was talking with three counter staff. I asked if they had heard of any customers having problems receiving their Social Security payments. All three immediately nodded their heads 'yes', with all of them looking distressed.
One said payments were being delayed "days and one person two weeks". My SS payment normally arrives on the third Wednesday of the month.
Imagine the ripple financial impact on local businesses -- grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies etc. -- and employment security if this continues or payments disappear completely.
I already have spoken to the staffer who handles constituent Social Security issues at my Congressional representative's district office and it is clear they are completely unaware, unprepared and disinterested for what I fear is coming. My guess is we will have a lot of homeless seniors on the streets in six months.
Everyone should begin hounding their Congressional delegations NOW.
I was thinking of applying for early Social Security payments and not waiting until I was 65, but is it going to be worth it? Maybe I should now so they'll be ready in a couple of years? And I really doubt our Congresswoman will be too bothered about SS problems... She seems to be too busy kissing Trump's ass.
I believe the age now is 67. I would encourage you to apply now and then put it all into savings until you retire. I retired at 67 and was able to have two years of SS income added to my retirement fund ... I didn't spend a dime of it during that time.
