Chris Hedges certainly saw these times coming. And, as he says, both parties are to blame. As for the immigration and deportation issues, I believe that Trump hypes the issue to appease his MAGA base and to cause fear and chaos. Actually, Obama was known as the "Deporter in Chief":" "According to governmental data, the Obama administration has deported more people than any other president's administration in history.

In fact, they have deported more than the sum of all the presidents of the 20th century.

President George W. Bush's administration deported just over two million during his time in office; and Obama’s numbers don’t reflect his last year in office, for which data is not yet available." https://ohss.dhs.gov/topics/immigration/yearbook

In his first term, Trump deported far fewer people than Obama. I despise Donald Trump, but I think that all the hype around immigration is a ploy used by both parties to keep the people of our nation divided and fearful, taking attention away from the oligarchs' implementation of "inverted totalitarianism" that Sheldon Wolin warned of and Chris Hedges speaks of in the above article.

Mark, thank you for sharing the Chris Hedges piece. How that man doesn’t fall into a fog of despair is impressive. His articles are always fascinating, heavy gut punches, but fascinating. Your cartoon; what immediately registered is that your drawing of Uncle Sam is exactly what has happened to me. I have no energy, haven’t written anything in weeks, and all I want to do is lay in bed in the dark. Yes, I’m taking anti-depressants now… which depresses me. But the Mother Fuckers won… as an old person I’m irrelevant, health insurance takes 1/3 of my social security check, rent another third … which leaves 1/3 for things like car insurance, electric, gas, wifi, phone, fuel, co-pays… and I try to find enough for food. Yes … DESPAIR … a heavy, wet, cold, suffocating blanket and the clowns haven’t even walked on stage yet as the murderers depart. Mark… you know what’s interesting? Alcohol holds no interest in this despair. Gummies were fun for a moment. All movies and shows seem stupid and I can’t get past 15 Mo yes when watching most movies. I can’t find my zeal… my zest for life… haven’t felt joy in forever … I don’t want to be like this. I don’t think I’m atypical now … American Despair. As usual Mark… great work. Sorry I don’t respond as much. I have to measure expended energy more carefully these days.
